WHO WE ARE

Our History

Pa Josiah Akindayomi

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) was founded in 1952 by Pa Josiah Akindayomi (1909 – 1981). Pa Akindayomi was raised in tribal religion in the state of Ondo, Nigeria.

Spiritually unsatisfied with tribal rituals, he became a member of the Church Missionary Society, where he was baptized in 1927. In 1931, he joined Cherubim and Seraphim, an Aladura Church.

Pursuing his spiritual quest, Pa Akindayomi eventually left Cherubim and Seraphim in 1952 to start a house church fellowship with nine members. RCCG continued to grow, led by Pa Akindayomi until his death in 1981.

Pastor

Enoch Adejare Adeboye

Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, affectionately referred to by RCCG members as ‘Daddy G.O, then assumed the leadership or General Overseer position.

Pastor Adeboye who was a lecturer of mathematics at the University of Lagos, Nigeria joined the R.C.C.G in 1973, and was ordained a pastor in 1975. His earliest involvement included translating Pa Akindayomi’s sermons from Yoruba into English. The appointment was confirmed by the reading of a sealed pronouncement by Pa Akindayomi after his burial. Under Pastor Adeboye’s oversight, RCCG has experienced explosive national and international growth, currently operating major ministries in the United States and United Kingdom.

The RCCG started in the UK in 1988, first as a house fellowship and to the glory of the name of the Lord, as at today, there are over seven hundred parishes all over UK and Ireland.

A humble man of mountain sized faith, Pastor Adeboye was featured in Newsweek’s December 2008 article on the world’s 50 most influential.
